Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable (Psalm 145:3)
Have you taken time this summer to notice the beauty of the night sky, the brilliance of the Moon?
Apparently, the moon doesn’t rotate, so we always see the same side of the moon. This made April 6th, 2026 historic, as human eyes, for the first time ever, saw the far side of the moon as NASA astronauts traveled abord Artemis II. They took some really neat pictures.
Yet, I could not help thinking that God has seen the far side of the Moon since before any human beings even existed. In fact, God was the One who created the moon and placed it in its orbit around the earth. Even more incredible, is the truth that God made every sun, planet, moon, and meteorite throughout the entire cosmos and is at this moment holding every heavenly body in place! (Colossians 1:16-17) Truly God's greatness is unsearchable!
Now let’s contemplate our place in the universe. As seen by the Artemis II astronauts, our home resides on a small, blue and white ball. And we are invisibly small and fragile specs on that ball. Who are we that God would be mindful of us? Especially since we are born with rebellious hearts, pridefully rejecting our Great Lord for whatever our selfish desires want. (Plasm 14:1-3; Isaiah 53:6a) We even ignore the perfections of our solar system that allow for life here on earth (for more on this, read an excellent article from Apologetics Press: The Goldilocks Principle: The Earth Is Designed for Us. and claim that everything just happened by chance so that we can try to get out of being accountable to God.
How is it that the creator of the cosmos would choose to put on fragile human flesh and join us in our tiny corner of the universe? How is it that our Lord and God would die on a cross to take the punishment (Isaiah 53:4-6) we deserved so that we could become his children and live with Him forever? (Galatians 4:3-7). In all the ways our Lord is Great, His love and His grace have to be the greatest!
I pray that whether you look at the photographs taken by the NASA astronauts or just look up into a clear night’s sky, that you will give glory to our Great God! I pray even more, that as you read the words of the Bible and hear the heart of our Savior, that you in doing so you will experience the great love and forgiveness of our God.
For by [Christ] all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together (Colossians 1:16-17).
